Research has showed that three out of four people have warning signs of having a periodontal condition. Furthermore, it has been found that the incidence of certain medical conditions increases if the person has periodontal disease, some examples of these conditions are heart disease, weakened Immune System, Diabetes, Pre-term low birth babies, Respiratory issues .
In its earlier stages it can be successfully treated, but once the disease progresses into the advanced stages it will create movement of the affected teeth, extreme destruction of the tissues that keep the teeth in place and will only be controlled by periodic gum treatment (commonly known as Deep Cleanings), with surgical treatments (surgical root planning and scaling) which means that the damage is now irreversible and or with extractions of teeth.
If you clench or grind your teeth periodically, and have periodontal disease, you may experience an accelerated rate of bone lose and disease since the presence of abnormal forces will negatively affect the periodontal condition.
